The free hero rotation or free-to-play hero rotation is a set of 14 Heroes playable for free in the game modes Training, Versus A.I., Quick Match, Unranked Draft and Ranked and in Custom Games, by all players. The rotation changes every Tuesday, usually offering an entirely new selection of heroes. Access to the 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th Hero of the weekly rotation is unlocked when a player reaches level 5, 10, 15 and 20 respectively.
Once the account reaches level 12, a 6th hero becomes available for free rotation. At level 15, a 7th hero becomes available for free rotation. Taking this week as an example: Account. Heroes of the Storm will bring out a new set of free-to-play Heroes every Tuesday. Here are your free Heroes for this week. Week of May 27 - June 3rd.

- In the early Technical Alpha, the developers temporarily allowed Raynor as an additional 8th free hero, in order to ease new players' transition out of the tutorial.
- The store closed on September 22, 2014. After that, all Heroes were temporarily free to play until September 29, 2014.
- On December 8, 2015, the weekly rotation was expanded from seven to ten free Hero slots.[1]
- From April 8 to 11, 2016, all Heroes became temporarily free to play to celebrate the Heroes of the Dorm grand final.[2]
- On March 14, 2017, the weekly rotation was expanded from 10 to 14 Hero slots.[3]
- On May 2, 2017, the unlockable hero slots' minimum level requirements were raised from 5, 7, 12 and 15 to 5, 10, 15 and 20 respectively, to correlate with the new hero leveling system.
- In late 2019, Blizzard stopped updating the free Hero rotation posts on the official forums (free Heroes still continue to be marked as such on the official website).

In order to facilitate the widest range of possibilities Heroes of the storm offer a technique referred to as ‘Hero Rotation’. In a nutshell, this ‘try and play’ technique allows for each new player to use a group of seven (7) different heroes each and every week. Heroes are from all roles including the warrior, assassin, support, and specialist. However, the new player is allocated only five(5) heroes a week from the ‘Hero Rotation’ list. As a bonus, if any of the player reaches level 12. then an extra slot is given bringing the total hero counts to six (6), upon reaching level 15 you get the seventh slot. At the end of the week a new set of heroes are ‘rotated’ in and you are once again allowed to play this particular ‘rotation’. Currently heroes are rotated every Tuesday.
In addition you may rotate heroes out in a three or four day cycle but only three or four certain heroes at a time. The entire object of this machination is to allow a new player to see all the attributes of as many heroes as possible so that they may make a decision as to which one they want to purchase.
How to Purchase Hero?
There will come times throughout game play that during one of the rotations you will want to make one of the heroes a permanent part of your hero set. This can be facilitated by purchasing with in game gold. Generating in game gold for your account is as follows.
First there is match play which offers from twenty (20) to thirty (30) gold upon winning the match. There are bonus stimpacks that can increase the gold payout as well.

Secondly, levelling your player can generate gold in the following scenarios
1. Reaching levels two (2) and or four (4) will give you 1000 gold.
2. Reaching levels eight (8) and or ten (10) you will be given 2000 gold.
3. Upon reaching level 5 while not in game will generate 500 gold.
Finally, you may also purchase in game gold with real life money. For as little as $3.99 USD you can receive 2000 gold and for $9.99 USD 15000 gold. Price of each hero is different. It is range from 2,000 – 10,000 in game gold.
